The Church of England officiated just over one in 10 opposite-sex marriages in 2023 – its lowest share on record outside of the pandemic. It recorded 23,004 marriages in 2023 in England and Wales – the lowest since records began in 1837, excluding the 2020 and 2021 Covid years.
